non-parent

Like several people above, I am curious as to what the by-laws state. Our Charter says that any parent, legal guaridan or paid staff member of the school is a member of the PTO, however only parents with a child in the school and residing in the town are eligible to serve on the board.

The rest of the situation raises red flags with me too. No offense to the parent who wants to help, but volunteering to help with events during the year is probably better than being on the board (or even chair ofd a big event). I hope you run for Pres and have a full slate of iin-school parent to fill out the board.

good luck.

I can't imagine why a parent would want to be the leader of a pto in a school they don't have a child in unless they can't give it up....control issue?? If it doesn't state it in your bylaws are there any others who would run against her? I am also a little concern with the statement that she wants to do if she doesnt have a job, does that mean if she gets elected and then gets a job that she is going to leave you hanging??

i would check your bylaws and make sure that she can run. i agree with crewchief, sometimes you look forward to that last year with some parents. also you might want to consider this, if she can be a member without having a child in your school, then what is stopping anybody in your community from becoming a member? you can get some "shady" people that way. not a good idea!

So instead of driving her husband crazy, she's going to drive you crazy instead!!!!

You say she's caused a lot of problems this year. Is she an existing officer or board member who just wants to stay on?

If she's caused enough trouble and people are anxious to see her go then she probably wouldn't stand a chance of being elected against you anyway.

Good luck!

She says that she would like to be pres if she does not have a job next year cuz she will drive her husband crazy by November. I also want to run for pres and am currently Vice. I am going to get another copy of the by laws from the principle and look over them myself. She has caused a lot of problems this year, so I am not sure if it would be a good idea.

In our by-laws it states that you have to have a child in the school, be a teacher or staff member in order to be on the pto. But if there is nothing in the by-laws then it would be up to your group. Why does she want to be pres.? Ask her. Ask your group for input. We had a soccer pres. who was great. He said there was no way he was ready to be pres. while he had a child playing because he wouldn't be able to remain impartial. It would of been all about his child. Maybe thats how she felt/feels.
If you think she can do the job and be a great assest to your group, I say go for it.
Good luck!
