Committees should also have a budget approved by the board. I have one pet peeve, though. I do not believe board meetings (or general meetings) are the proper forum for committees to actually plan their events. It takes up too much time.

Once the committees are formed, the committee members should select a chairperson, set up a committee meeting date for planning the details. The chairperson can present the plans at a board meeting, and to ask for approval for funds, dates, times, etc.

Each of our officers is empowered to create committees.

The committees can't really do anything except research without going through the board and the membership, though.

If you don't expect too much from me, you might not be let down. <img src=images/smilies/smile.gif>

Here's what our bylaws say about committees:

The president shall appoint all committees and shall designate a chairman of such committees subject to board approval.

The Standing Committees shall include all standing committees approved and appointed for the current school year.

The board shall be defined as ... ... and the appointed chairmen of the standing committees.

We appoint committees and chairmen during the summer and officially recognize standing committees and their chairmen at the first meeting of the school year.

If it's determined during the school year that establishing an official committee is warranted it requires a majority vote. If we decide the work is good but doesn't necessarily require/deserve a voting position then we assign it as a sub-committee of a larger committee.

If your bylaws don't address the issue, they I'd assume that you and your fellow officers decide which committees you want for the year. As a courtesy to your principal, teachers and voting members, I'd suggest including them in the process to make sure everything falls in line with your groups mission.

Hey guys, I have a stupid question that i know some of you already know the answer to.

Our bylaws don't state anything about forming committees and i don't know if they should. I'd like to start some new committees like a monthly news letter, nominating committee, directory, and a gift committee for purchasing the student's gifts. Do I just start the committees or do they need to be voted on? Do our bylaws need to state something in there about this? Please don't forget, I'm not president yet!!
