Our charter specifies that voting for a new board takes place as the last agenda item on the next-to-last regular PTO meeting of the year. For us that is next week.

We have always held the voting portion at the beginning of the meeting- after we explain the positions, take nominations from the floor, etc. This gives the people who are tallying the vote time to do so and at the end of the meeting we announce the "winner" and introduce/welcome them to the Board.

We conduct the vote at the end of the meeting as well. Ours, too, is a formality since we always have one candidate per position.

However, during our bylaws review session this year the committee explained that according to Robert's Rules an unopposed candidate is not a shoe in but rather becomes subject to a yes/no vote. Technically, a no vote tells a candidate that you'd rather have no one and keep looking than have him/her, which seems rude. But, this also prevents a group from getting stuck with someone who'd just be a train wreck simply because nobody ran against them.

Luckily, we have an amicable group and it's never come to this, but it's nice to know we have that option.....

we too have only one per slot, so we dont even vote, as its not even a formality. its a done deal. thats what the outgoing officers tell us, if only one person per slot, no need to vote. how much more laid back CAN it get than that? how nice no one fights for spots, everyone comes out a winner

Tonight is our last meeting of this school year and we will be voting on new officers tonight. When during the meeting should this take place? I'm thinking it should be at the end. Really it's just a formality since only 4 people were nominated, one each for the 4 openings. No one is running against anyone.

We're a very laid back bunch, can't you tell? ;)
