Who should control the money, the PTO or the Principal?

I agree with you 100%. Someone said to me recently (because i have a principal who tries to control the pto but I won't let her.) where is the p for principal in PTO.

Thank You! I was starting to feel like maybe I was alone in my thoughts of who should have control. I feel like I am the only one who is willing to put my neck out there to save the PTO from loosing our main objective- our kids and our schools!

If we give up control of the money, then we are basically becoming the Principals person work horse. Don't you think?

I would not give the principal control of the PTO money. It's not his/hers. You can't garuntee how it would be spent. 2 signatures is definitely the way to go. Have the checks signed at your monthly meetings when you can. Have a detailed treasurer's report. It just sounds like the principal wants the money for his/her own use in the school. I wouldn't do it. Good luck. The PTO is suppose to use funds raised to help the teachers & students....not the principal.

Due to a scandle in a Neighboring schools PTO, (their treasurer was stealing PTO money)some members in our PTO feel that we should give all monetary control to the principal. Even though we have to have 2 signatures for any outgoing money, our treasurers are now not so sure they want to deal with it.

Our PTO oversees 2 schools and 1 of our 2 principals is insisting that we hand over 1/2 of the PTO fundraising money so he can do with it what he pleases. What do you think?

I am completely against this. I thought that one of the roles of the PTO was to help provide assistance to teachers and students with purchasing items or servicing our school in ways that the Principal can not or will not approve. Why would we want to do all the work to raise the funds and then have no say in what those funds are used for. Any views would be greatly appreciated.
