Need info. about co-presidents

In our district five out of the six PTO's have co-presidents. It has been this way for a number of years, and I assume it has worked out since no pair that I know of has broken up. The by-laws generally state that all officer positions can be shared. For some of our PTO's, the treasury job is split between a Receiving Treasurer and a Treasurer. The Receiving Treasurer collects, counts, and deposits all the money, giving a monthly deposit report and the deposit slips to the Treasurer. The Treasurer writes the checks, balances the account, and does the Treasurer's Report. I have been Treasurer under this system and it worked very well. It also provides and added layer of control since a single individual is not responsible for all the funds.

That's exactly what we thought. No one wanted to run, so we figured if we did it together it would be manageable. It didn't work for us, but others here have posted success. So I guess that makes it a "it depends..."

This was my thinking...the job of president can be so overwhelming; finding people willing to run for office is hard enough, especially for the president position. When it's election time, what if no one wants to run? I thought that "suggesting" the idea of co-presidents might help.

mi3sons, WOW! It sounds like you guys have a great working order. Working FT and being so involved in your PTO. I do feel that maybe your situation is special. I'm so glad to hear from someone that can make it work. Keep it up, sounds like you're doing great!

I am co-president at our elementary school. It is working out great for us. I work fulltime and cannot be on campus during the day and my "other half" works for her husband and can be on campus. I have been involved with PTO for about 6 years now, and she has a kindergartner. We have divided many things. She did the tshirt sales and is having a yearbook committee. I do all of the emailing, phone calls, make flyers and head up staff appreciation. I arranged all of the organization for our Santa Land and she was on campus to help run it. We communicate almost daily via email and talk on the phone about once a week. I direct/lead our meetings, but I don't take over, she speaks up also. We both have the same vision and seem to agree on everything. We don't make decisions without consulting each other.
Since this is our first year and we had lots of stuff to get going at the school and the hurricanes messed up alot of plans, we are taking this as a learning year. We have both agreed that if they will have us, we will do it next year.
I had never met her before our first PTO meeting, where we both agreed that we could do it and I feel that I have an ally and a new friend.

We have co-vice presidents. This is working out very well for our group. Since they take on seperate projects that the Prez. doesn't have time for and each one brings their own strenths and weaknesses.

I couldn't imagine have co presidents. There are too many decisions that need to be made and to get two people to agree would be time restictive. Also two treasurers would be too confusing.
