election of officers

This is really confusing, because looks to me like there are two threads going on the same subject, but I'll give it a try....

I'm still confused about how you are set up since apparently there are no bylaws or set meetings, but I think the money just needs to sit in your bank account until a lot of things are resolved. Unless the school's tax ID number is on the account and you are actually a subgroup of the school, I don't see how a school employee can just go in and take over the account. If you're independent, you must at least have some document on file with the bank showing how many signatures you need and who they are. Once new officers are in place, then they get to sign checks. Until then, I think your name just continues to sit on there. I can't say I've ever heard of a situation where someone goes in and takes all the signatories off an account and leaves no one on at all--I'm not sure the bank would even allow it.

I don't know how your group makes decisions on spending money now, but I wouldn't unilaterally decide to do anything with the money at this point if I were you.

As someone put in the other thread, it seems to me that the school is trying to help get this resolved by organizing an election to find people who are willing to take this on. I don't understand why, if you and the other 2 officers don't like the way the school did it, that you don't just draft a letter to organize a meeting and election, and get it distributed to parents ASAP? Just say, look, it's a new year, some people have been in their positions for a number of years, they are unable to continue. In order for XYZ parent group to continue to do the good work for our school that we have been doing, we need new blood. (Obviously, it would need to be worded a bit more eloquently, but you get the idea.) Then, if no one steps up, you can either leave the group inactive (with the money sitting in the account), or use whatever procedures you have to decide how to spend money to disburse the rest of it appropriately and disband the group.

The person says they will not stay in, but after being stabed in the back again who knows. All I know is we need to hold elections. And the school is now getting into it. I had turned the check book into the office about 3 weeks ago. I went and got it today. My name is on the line, and until someone else takes the spot I will hold onto it. I do not want back in. I hace had it with the games. It is just see the PTO turn out this way. alot of us worked hard to get it where it needed to be. Sorry, 3 of us....
So iam just not sure what to do with the money if the school shuts it down. Which could happen now.

Time to play some real politics here then.

You can ask this person to leave then if she will not then you can impeach her. Not my favorite or what I want to suggest but an intervention is despratly needed.
*you need a copy of Roberts Rules of Order since you have no by-laws. (library or web site is good)
*Do you have a parent willing ang ready to step up when (optimistic here) she leaves.
*Do you have the support of the school?
*How much of this can be done before you met with the rest of the parents? and how much is this 'gal' rocking their boats?

Hang in there. I hate to use the "be there done that" instead I'd rather have a ribbon that shows I've survived PTO politics! Stay in touch. Really, we like to hear happy endings!!

The problem person is our Sec. She is always causing a problem. She never came to the school at time needed. There were 3 of us that were there all day. Doing copies. Or whatever needed to be done. I know you do not have to be there everyday. That is what I chose to do. But be there when fundraiser is there or when help is needed.A few years ago I was blamed for sending a letter to the school about two officers. I did not do it and am the type to say it to your back.
About 2 weeks ago the school had set up a PTO meeting. Election of officers should have been held. 3 of us were unable to show. up,and letters were not sent to parents. So I told her on the school phoe That no election could be held. and that with out us there it would just be a school meeting. She then went to the school admd. and told them I called her, but made it look like I was causing problems. So we are in the same boat again. PROBLEMS!!!!!!! I put my all into the PTO for the teachers and children. She does it for the Glory of her. So that is the problem.

Since there are no bylaws, at this point, it is an open ballgame. (Bylaws should be written as soon as possible so there is some structure for your group). I think you should go to the principals or the powers that be and see if they can give you some names or help you rally some people to come to the plate.

You state that there have been some problems, if you could elaborate for us, it might be easier for us to advise you.

So far it seems that you want out because of a problem person. Why? What? Fill us in a little.
If you want your name off the checkbook NOW and did not schedule a fundraiser because you do not want to do it anymore, hang in there for the kids. If three of you are not working well with this one person, and there are no bylaws can't you find a way to "remove" her? Again, very sketchy details which is why you are not getting very many responses. Fill us in.
