I do not understand how he can be an aide in an after school program (I am assuming he was paid) but not be allowed to sign a contract saying that he agrees to volunteer his time for duties of a parent group.

I am glad the boy is eager to sacrifice his time for a good cause, he is setting a good example for his younger siblings, but as a mom I feel that a boy his age should be going out on dates and ball games, spending time with kids his own age.

This is a Parent Teacher Association, right? There is a lot I do not understand about the PTA, but our PTO's by laws state that in order to me an officer, even a member you must have a child in school or be on staff. I figure your by laws has you qualifactions included somewhere.

Of course he could sue for discrimination because it only allows parents and teachers to be recognized members....JUST KIDDING! Since he won the election it appears this is what your group wants, I hope everything works out for you.

Another reason I am glad we are not a PTA. This is just like the articles I have read on the grandparents that are being excluded. This group should be thankful they had a youth memeber that not only is involved - but wants to be involved.

If the issue is them signing contracts at 17, can that be by-passed if he drafts everything to the pres who signs and distributes? If not, really hope that he makes one of the 2 youths that are involved.

Personally - I was once really involved in our town, school, etc, until I was told I could not because of my age - also 17. I am now 30 and have only been involved for the past 2 years (almost) so I hope you don't push him away. I was very mad over the incendents because it was soley based on my age, and nothing else. I've grown up, but still feel that if you have someone that is willing to stand up for a difference, age should not matter (ask the grand parents that are being turned away from the PTAs).

Can't believe this is an issue if he is really determined to help. You can find a way to fit him in, even if it's not in the current role he was elected to.

As noted two times in the BLOG, we just had a teenager win an election for Recording Secretary but get held off on getting that postition. He ran against the nominating commitees recommendation of another member who is a Mom. He has two younger sisters at our school.
What is your opinion on this? Just looking for an outside point of view or two.
