Who oversees PTO's

The school board and district have said that they are not acountable. A group of us parents have went to the PTO board and asked numerous questions. Most of which were unanswered or answered in such a way that the board could care less how a majority of the parents felt. We were misled! Our children were carring fliers that stated "the money being raised was for playground equipment." It has been a nightmare. The PTO has not registered to be a non profit corporation. They also have no insurance. The president of the PTO board works for the principal as a teachers aid. I am having them investigated by the district attorney's office and have written every politician I know. Is there anyone else that can over see a PTO? Because this PTO is out of control!

I know you mentioned the school district and this just really shows how different schools are. Our school district has a set of guidelines, then again too is there anything about how much your board can spend before needing membership approval? We have $49.99 ;) before we need to put it up to a vote.

They have meetings at a board members house and have taken $23,000 from the playground fund to buy the pricipal a digital marquee for our new school.

Turn up the heat and ask the questions that need answers. Obviously the Principal is thrilled to get the money for his/her needs but if this was marked for somethingelse there are some answers that are needed. In a nutshell, from what I have seen and learned, as a Board Member I am accountable to YOU the member weither you pay dues or otherwise. You and my peers voted for me to do a job, also, I am accountable to the school board (we are actually a committee of the school board).Honestly, others that are just as upset as you need to ask some really hard up questions and I wouldn't take "We work hard and so WE decided what WE wanted to do with this money". Bull....it's March, nominations and elections are coming too, more to think about.

May the force be with you on this one.....

I think you should check to see if your town has board policys and if the PTO is following them. Otherwise, send a notice home to all parents letting them know where their money went to. Hopefully your parents will speak up.

Our PTO is not following their bylaws. They have meetings at a board members house and have taken $23,000 from the playground fund to buy the pricipal a digital marquee for our new school. The district is unwilling to take action. What can we do to get our children their money back?
