We nominate in April, vote in May but new officers do not take over till August 1st, this gives us time to get everything closed out from the last school year before the new people take over! Our bylaws state when all these things happen and so should yours.

Our election is in May - the new officers take over the first day after the last day of school.
(a lot can be accomplished during the summer)
Is this your first election? Are the other parents wanting to get involved eligable to run for office? My advice would be to stress the importance of following your bylaws to your board. The parents who want to be involved now could turn on your board. In my experience, the parents probably don't want to take on the responsibility of running the show (especially if it is new to the school) they just want to help. And your fellow board members would be fools not to grab on to those parents now - form trusting relationships so that they will be there for you to chair events. And take over the organization when your board "burns out" because if they plan on doing it all - they will.

I'm getting nowhere with these officers. Excuse me as I vent.
Information meeting in oct. over 35 showed up. Only a few ran for office. Have had 4 officer meetings to date. We are applying for nonprofit status and have tax exempt number. We have made small changes to the bylaws. With so far no vote by membership or meeting with them as of yet.
Question: When are election? principal "in the fall". Our current bylaws state "officers to be installed at 1st meeting" and call for a nominating committee elected by the organization. Our 1st meeting with membership is at the end of this month, so I mentioned the need to get started on the election process because the time needed. One officer said I don't think we will be able to do that referring to having new officers installed at the 1st meeting next year. I'll be pushing it at our next meeting again Perhaps our principal will show up. I knew the principal wanted us to serve through the summer, but this is getting ridiculous. We are not anyone's gift to pto.
Parents are already asking when they will be getting involved and shouldn't we be voting on some of this. I know we can lose our nonprofit status if we do not follow our bylaws but, what else can I do to keep these pto officers from ruining it for those who really wanted to be involved. And yes I'm afraid we are going to spend money these members have raised just us 5. Should I refuse to vote? I know work from within for change. Should I let the officers know I will be doing this ? Of course they want the united front look.
