I see no problems with her doing 1 fundraiser and designating the funds go to the band but to actually do multiple fundraisers would take away from the rest of the school. As for her harrassment deal...I don't know you situation in detail regarding that but just remember a lot of people when they don't get what they want like to defend themselves for whatever reason by insulting so if thats what's going on or what comes to it ignore her and she'll catch the hint

We ask that different teachers bring their requests at the beginning of the year. If it's feasible we will put it into the budget.
Our local PTA recently sponsored a bake sale during their performances that brought the band program a good amount of money. We also had extra funds from an extremely successful fundraiser and the music program did recieve some of those funds after a vote by the membership.
I wouldn't necessarily hold a seperate fundraiser though.
If they need funds and you have them then I don't see a problem if the members vote to approve it. But you need to know "Who, What, Where, Why and how much" not just hand over a blank check.

Why don't you bring this to the band teachers attention and ask her/him if they need money? Perhaps the band teacher asked the parent to approach the PTO. They do not teach teachers how to interact with parent groups in college so it's possible that this teacher just didn't know that all she/he has to do is ask. I can understand this because at a small school (like ours) the instrumental teacher only comes in for a few hours twice a week and also serves 2 other schools.

Just a couple of things. First, I see your point about the PTO funds being for the entire student body, but aren't the band students part of that whole? Not that I'm advicating giving the band any funds, but I don't see how it can be an issue for the PTO if the band teacher hasn't asked for anything.
Second, I spent seven years in band from elementary thru high school. In all of those years, the band students raised their own funds. We sold candy, fruit cakes and calendars. We held car washes and had aluminum can drives. And thru all this, we never asked the PTO or PTA for funds.
Stick to your decision.

Our school has a band program.This programs enrollment is about 50 students. parents are responsible for the rental of their child's instrument. The BOE has a band teacher that pulls students out of regular classes once a week for lessons.
There is a parent that wants to raise funds for this band program. There are no specific items that have been requested. The band teacher has not come to the PTO board for any special request. This parent wants to use PTO events such as bingos, talent show to raise funds.
The PTO has no problem if the band teacher and herself worked together to raised funds with band parents as a seperate group. We would help by ordering through PTO & advertising in news letter. The PTO board doesn't feel it would be right to use PTO functions because it doesn't benifit the entire student body. She has accused the PTO of harrassment because this has been going on for almost 3 months and we still stand strong in our decission. You can't give to one & not the other! Any help out there?
