Opening a PTO Bank account

We have 4!

The President and Treasurer

The Principal

and one disinterested party the Vice Principal

This is sufficient to get any check we issue properly approved and signed. We also require two signatures. But be careful with this - banks will honor checks with only one! I know!

Got that too, but let me ask......should the president be on that account. Or just maybe a third person just in case that second person is not available?

I don't know if someone else mentioned this, but I would get an account that requires two signatures.

I guess I prefer to be cautious.

I don't know about proper procedure, but go to every bank in your town and ask them. Do they offer back accounts for pto, pta, etc. What are the fees associated. Are you going to get charged for bringing in change? Is there free checks provided? What about when it is summer vacation are there monthly banking fees. Do they provided an endorsement stamp for the back of checks? Do you get your checks back or do you have to pay for that? After checking into every bank. You'd be surprised most bank in our area don't offer accounts to ptc. Oh the most important question what is the daily/monthly balance requirements? Then I would highly suggest after you choose your bank to have two signers on every check. Have all banking statements go to the school. This is for when your current treasurer turns over the banking stuff. Call or write the irs and get your Employee Indentification Number. Its free, this way no one has to use there own social security number to open the account. Depending on your bylaws find out who is required to be on the account. Two is always better than one. This way no one questions the treasurer. Most of the time you can buy checks cheeper from other companies rather than from the bank. Try Checks in the mail.com. Like I said I don't know about proper procedure, this is just what we did when we took over this year. If you have a account already and someone signs on the account. Make sure to have them taken off the account. I'm sure the bank has the required documents. We found out our treasurer from the last two years was never an authorized signer on the bank account. So don't be surprised at what you find out. Also if you do have a outgoing treasurer, make sure he/she goes over everything he/she has done in the past.Don't just take over the banking stuff without at least an audit. Protect your future ptc.
