What is required to be incorporated? Do we need to file Income Tax forms? Do we need to have a tax ID number too? Do you need to have one to have the other?

Our high school parent group is coming up on 6yrs now, was first organized as a non-profit Association, & NOT incorporated! Is it possible to now incorporate?
I understand that we'd have to first file incorporation form, then re-submit with IRS for non-profit status!! Can we use the same employer ID #? Are there any other steps to this process? Do we need a professional to help with this?
Does this mean that basically the group is "starting over?"
