Rizzy, we were in the same situation last year. If you have By-Laws - someone from the floor can say something about the By-Laws were not followed and the election can be suspended until the situation is resolved by PTO-Board and PTO-Members. It is unethical when Principals take it upon themselves to do that kind of act. We are all parents volunteers and the organization has By-Laws for running the organization. This issue has left me with mixed feelings about the school administrator and their authority. Yes, the PTO is their to support the staff, students the By-Laws need to be followed.

First of all, dig out those by-laws. (We recently found ours, I think they were chisled in stone and they are in need of revising)I am sure you will find some kind of clause that prohibits your principal from doing this.

I assume that these functions were presented to and voted on by the members. Remind your principal (politely) that this is what the members wanted and if he/she feels the need for a change it should be brought before the members, at least the exec. board.

What's the point in being a member if no matter what you say or vote on is going to be changed? This will quickly drive members away. As for the changing of the seats, there are usually specific rules in your by-laws about how those situations should be handled. Best of luck.

I am a new PTO president with principal problems. We have to have everything approved by the principal in our situation. There have been several times the PTO planned something such as a dance or cake walk and the principal took it upon themself to change what we were doing. The worst part is you don't find out things have been changed uintil the night of the meeting.
Now we are getting ready to hold elections and the principal has decided to put a parents name not even on the ballot but on the board itself by moving another member that is on the PTO board already. I need to know exactly how far a principal can or cannot go when it comes to the
PARENT - TEACHER ORG. This is not her organization it's our's PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
