Meet the School Board Candidates Night?

21 years 4 months ago #57306 by Tamilyn
We have five District School Board positions open for the May election. I was asked by a teacher if the PTO would hold a "Meet the Candidates Night". I am not sure if we are allowed to sponsor this event. Our by-laws state "The organization will not, directly or indirectly, participate or intervene in any political campain." But I am not sure if it applies to this. We are not endorsing any particular candidate. It will be for every candidate that would like to be involved.
See, the reason we would like to do this is because several members of the current board and several who are running simple have an agenda. They simple want to cut, cut, cut, without really knowing the importance of why it is needed. They have never even stepped foot in the schools and really have know idea how day to day operations work. So, it is very important that we ask questions and find out how much knowledge the candidates actually have about the schools. For the last year and a half the board has been very divided and some have their own agendas other than having the students best interest in mind. We also just had our Assistant Superintendent resign. This is going to be a huge loss to the district. He has been the force behind our school becoming the top school in the county from one of the bottom school by implementing many great educational goals in our Strategic Plan. There are members of the School Board who feel we don't need to replace him! They are just looking at the big $ amount the district would save by not replacing him. This would be a huge mistake! With his resignation we essentially have no one in charge of curriculum!
Sorry! (I kind of got on a roll there)
Anyway, my question is: Can the PTO sponsor such an event?
