no bylaws-I'm I in the right

Raesmom,

First of all - thanks on behalf of a whole lot of kids for stepping up and helping out with the PTO. Your heart is definitely in the right place.

Secondly (you know there are two shoes and the other one has to fall, right?) PTO is not about being right. I'm not saying you are right or you aren't right - but it's not a competition. Unfortunately parent groups have had some relatively not-so-nice stigmas of being unfriendly places for outsiders. I believe that it doesn't have to be that way.

If you are accepting the presidency for the rest of this year and for next, I would suggest that all officers as well as the principal sit down to plan out at least 4 to 6 months in advance. Schedule regular meetings.

The other thing (and it seems like you have accepted this) is that not all officers/board members need to be at every function. There will be times that you can't be at something and there will be times when others can't attend and will have to trust that what has been well planned will happen as it should.

Know that you have support here from many who care as passionately as you do about the kids, their families, the staff and community and we'll help when we can.

Chin up - you're definitely on the right track.

no bylaws-I'm I in the right was created by raesmom
We had our feb meeting last night and i had two officers upset with me and one quit this morning.
I was asked to take the role as president this year with only ever going to 2 PTO meetings. the old president was ready to leave and only was in the role to keep the PTO going.
I'm a person who comes up with a lot of ideas and likes to see them happen fast. I have learned that as a PTO i need to discuss my ideas and dates with other officers and staff/parents. I am very personal and have been able to get parents involved who at one time or another in the past have not been welcomed as a valuable person.
My dilemma is i set a date at our jan meeting to have a family event at our school on feb 28. two officers are very involved with out of school activies and had an event planned. And said that they would not be able to help and that i should reconcider changing the date(this was asked last night) and was very unhappy after lineing up parents who would help even if the treasures were not able to.
I am the one who normale goes out and asks for donations and such and i was not able to move the date to the one requested for personl reasons i was fine if anyone else wanted to organize this night but none of the officers who were against the date would to this.
my consern is the famlies and staff who support our school and even for those who don't.
to get to the point i was never given any guide lines or bylaw because they never had any.
I'm i in the right if i set a date if it doesnot effect another school activity?
I only set dates after failed attempt after atempt of a group planning.
I have support from our princapal.
Sorry this is so long but it feels a little better getting this out.
