can the PTO be dismantled?

The good news here is you have the summer to think about how seriously you want to try and change things, the 'bad news' is this is going to take (more or less) a small village to see some changes.

It really doesn't matter that you are a catholic school, but your by-laws are what will matter in this case. I know right now you are fustrated and would like to just walk away but this may be a good time to talk to other parents from the school to see how they feel. Sometimes if the Principal sees a group of parents that feel the same way about an issue he/she may take the issue more seriously. If you feel you need a Plan B, with your by-laws in hand and a copy of Roberts Rule of Order (chances are you'll have your vp searching for answers as you rattle off procedures from your little book from "Robert". To answer you question, yep, your PTO can be disbanned, but it depends on your by-laws etc. Can it be saved? Yep, but once again it depends on how the membership feels, if the group can become organized in itself and present the issues they are having with the current officers and have parents ready to be elected into office from a far and organized election you may just be able to reclaim your PTO. Yes, this will be a lot of work but this is when you sit down and think (and maybe even pray) can this work and do we have a group of parents strong enough to take on the Board. I bet you do and you can...coffee and donuts after church may be the first place to start...
One more thing, don't forget who you are doing this for. I am reminded 5x's over my reason for caring so much about our school...

I am so frustrated, annoyed and disgusted by the actions of our PTO. I have many questions about their actions. Can parents be charged a mandatory PTO dues but yet not be allowed a voice? We have no open meetings-only exec committee mtgs which are closed. There are no open elections. The positions are appointed by a nominating committee who of course they just move the same members around the positions. The nominating committee consists of 3 people according to the bylaws-Pres, vice and parliamentarian. Since they didn't want the person who would be vice prez/ways and means involved this year, they changed the parliamentarian position to v.p./parliamentarian.
We are in a catholic school if this has any bearing. Many people who care about and work hard volunteering for the school in service and fundraising capacities are treated very poorly. I have condsidered leaving the school for the past 2 years but it would be very difficult to get into another one as they are all full and our public schools are horrible so that is not an option. Going to the principal has not been an option as she had hand picked many of these people. What can we do?
