Proposed By-Law Changes

It is my understanding that as a 501(c)3 organization you CANNOT have an official position on political issues as an organization. When a referendum was on our ballot for increased taxes to build more schools one "side" wanted to make a presentation at a PTO meeting and in order for th PTO to do so - they invited the other "side" to make a presentation as well in order to remain neutral. I would err on the side of caution if you are in the process of obtaining not-for-profit status. I'm sure the superintendent is required to remain neutral as well and has put you (collective you - the organization) in an uncomfortable position by placing your group's name on the paper/flyer that was distributed. Without finger pointing, if possible, I would make it clear at the meeting that your board did not have anything to do with distribution of the flyer if that is a factual statement.

Good luck!

In our bylaws, Article II: Classification it reads "The PTO of CIPLC is a non-profit, non-partisan, and non-political organization."

Does that help?

Our PTO is looking to add something to our by-laws. We are constantly being asked by our Superintendant to donate money towards political issues (bonds, headlee amendment, millages etc.) She feels that because she supports the issue our group should as well...problem is we usually don't. She has sent out flyers to families at our school that state they were paid for by our PTO at the bottom but we never paid for any of it. My question is this do any of you have wording in your by-laws concerning staying nuetral on political issues and not contributing money to the district for such matters? By the way I am now in the middle of filing for our 501 c3 status...was told for years that we were not allowed to do this but turns out we are:) Our meeting is tonight..Tuesday 5-21, any help will be GREATLY appreciated :D
