Thanks to all who responded...I'm not sure of the by-laws for our PTO.. I will find out. Yes, she did make a terrific motion and it carried. She does have the best interest for the children. I'm new at this and I want to do it right. Thanks again.

The principal should have the right to bring forth a motion as a member of the PTO, but for the sake of fairness maybe the motion should be brought forward by a third party. Would the motion be looked at in a less biased manner that way?

If you are taking a poll - in our organization they can because our membership consists of "parents and guardians of students attending XYZ, as well as teachers, school administrators and community members who have an interest in the well-being of the school and its students".

In our group they can not. They can come with a request, and we will discuss it, but a member will have to make the motion for them. This has never been a problem for us. Honestly, our principals don't ask for much, so we usually happily give them what they ask for.

Hi 204 -

Can the principal make a motion? Depends on your bylaws. Is your principal a member of your group?

PTOs are independent, so there is no standard answer for the question you've asked.

I'm not sure of the by-laws, but can the school Principal make a motion to purchase items? I do know that they are able to address the needs for the school and the children. But...can they actually make a motion? Your help would greatly be appreciated.
