Principal issues....

Does the principal have a copy of the by-laws? (Maybe they're completely lost.)

Is your PTO legally incorporated and does it have 501(c)(3) status? If not, your principal may be trying to save you the trouble of doing this; if it's a small PTO and you don't have the people/resources to do it, you might be fine as a "PTC" (parent-teacher committee), working under the school.

In my district, while the school board may determine who is allowed to request space, final approval for a request to space in our particular school is given by the principal.

Do not close your account and give the PTO's money to the school!!

Bad idea.....

He legally has no control over the PTO. The school district board decides if you can meet and hold functions on school property.

The bylaws shoud have been given to you by the previous prez....you can't get them from that person?? The principal shouldn't be the only person who has a copy of the bylaws.

He can't control your money.

Principal issues.... was created by Very Concerned PTO Prez
I was asked to serve as PTO President this year at the middle school. After repeated requests, I have yet to receive a copy of the bylaws. Also,in the first meeting with the school's principal, he asked that we close the PTO banking account and subsequently run all funds raised through the school. Here are my questions, first of all, can he legally disban the PTO? Secondly, I have a major problem as a Parent as well as a PTO rep of him not allowing any "checks and balances" in place to be able to ensure monies raised are spent where designated. And shouldn't we as parents have a right to decide how the monies we raised are approiated and not solely the Principal? I also feel something isn't "quite right" as to how the monies will be given back to the teachers' classroom accounts as he orginally promised prior to our beginning of our first fund raiser this year. Where can I go for help on this matter to investigate.... because I really feel something isn't right.
