School closing, rules involved?

13 years 5 months ago #155874 by JHB
If it's a certainty that the new school will open, albeit with a delay for a year, I wouldn't disband the PTO or give away any equipment.

Anything purchased and given to the school is no longer the PTO's property. You can work with the principal and hopefully have input, but where that stuff goes is the district's decision.

You'd want to make sure you have some officers/leadership in the younger grades that will be involved in the PTO 2 years from now. Spend down your funds to benefit current students as usual. Decide what start up funds you want to preserve and then leave them in the bank for a year.

Later you can change the PTO name if necessary or start a new organization and disband this one if you need to.

Would that work in your situation?

Hello,

I am the PTO President at an elementary school in Ohio. This evening the school board voted to close this elementary at the end of this school year. The school will close and staff and students will split up for 1 year. We are getting new schools so a lot of the students will move together into the new school. So, for one year there will not be a PTO with our current school name. After 1 year the new school may be named the same as what my school is named now.

I am not sure what I need to do to close out the school year. I need advice as to what to do in regard to finances, in regard to things the PTO has purchased for the building, for staff/students.

This situation is not good and I truly wish we didn't have to deal with this but unfortunately we do so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Cindy
