Sounds strange to me -- do your by-laws really prohibit you from taking a board position? Our by-laws would even allow your husband to have a board position -- anyone who has a child in the school is eligible.
It sure does leave a bad taste in your mouth. I suppose you could run for treasurer anyway, even if the board didn't put you on the slate of candidates -- depending on your by-laws -- but don't blame you for not wanting to get in with cliquish people.
We are having some election problems also. The elected Pres stepped down before school even started so the VP was moved up to the Pres position leaving the VP position vacant. So, the departing Pres. who is moving up to the middle school level stepped in as VP until another election can be held. Someone volunteered to be VP and no one else stepped up. Now the departing Pres (acting VP) is trying to drum up someone to run against the other volunteer.
Our school is only in its third year but it has grown from 50 students to 220. I have heavily volunteered with the PTO since last year. This summer I was asked by the incoming president to be on the board. In the first board meeting I volunteered for treasurer since it was vacant. The board was ecstatic and immediately thrusted the books onto me to review before the official all member vote in. I studied the books and then the day of the vote got an eerie phone call from the president that I would probably be disqualified and they were replacing my name with someone else because my husband is a teacher at the school. She also stated I could never be on any executive committee position due to this conflict of inteerest. My husband has been a teacher there since last year which the whole board knows about (as he is their greatest volunteer/liason!) so I thought the timing and sudden change of mind out of place. I wrote the president an email saying the way she handled this was not in good taste even if it is a conflict of interest she should have realized that earlier and not asked me to be on the board. I have a suspicion that the previous president who is difficult to get along with, advised against me being on the board. I have decided not to volunteer with PTO because its a very cliquish group and has all along been quite wishy washy. Also, the new president has placed 2 of her lifelong friends on the board (their kids just joined the school this year) without having any previous experience volunteering with the PTO.
My question is is this normal practice, to continue to make rule changes at the last minute?
