Our school is on the chopping block what to do

14 years 4 months ago #152837 by MIDad
Cat was sure on the right track, but the fact that your students will be split to three different schools certainly complicates things. If you can find out how many students will be going to each school, you could split money proportionately; if not you could give each school 1/3 of the money.

Dividing property would obviously be harder. Depending on the kind of property you have and how much time and energy you have, you could let reps from the other PTOs look it over and see what they want (and toss a coin or draw straws if more than one of them want the same thing). Or you could consider donating it to charity, or auctioning it off with the proceeds split among the three schools just like the money.

Good luck, and I echo Cat's comment about how well you're handling this.

Thanks for the support.

Unfortunately our students will probably be divided into at least 3 different schools. So I am not sure what to do about dividing the property. I hope that the school board will stay out of this one because the money is solely the property of the PTO.

Thanks,

Mary

FIRST, thank you for being mature about your school closing. I have seen many many parents who make the worst of it-- it is unfortunate- but necessary these days, and meeting a challenge head on in a positive way benefits your children.

Second, the PTO at your new school needs to reach out to you. But if they don't, go vice versa-- that is now YOUR pto too.

Third, as to your question, I would gift a large amount of your budget to the new PTO for the new school year. THat is now where your children and efforts will be.

THEN, yes, I would consider a nice, positive end-of-the-year party.

Best of luck to your district!

I am President of the PTO at my daughter's school. We are on the chopping block to close at the end of this year.

Our by-laws have no provision for diovling the funds in our accounts.

We are thinking of having a great big blow out party after we pay for the fest of the field trips that are scheduled this spring.

I would love any feed back on this.

Mary
