Does the school board approve your bylaws?

Here's a post from awhile back where we were discusing customizing your bylaws.

You can search the Forum for more advice and samples.

Also Sandra Pfau England has a PTO sample on her non-profit law website.

Our school board didn't have to see ours, but you'll need to check with yours.

What is it you are trying to start - the bylaws? In that case, the best course is to find samples from successful - ideally 501(c)(3) - PTOs in your area. If they are already a 501, then they will have the language the IRS demands (which is only a few pieces). It's not absolutely critical the samples be from PTO's in your state/area, but it might be beneficial if there are any local policies that come into play.

Then form a small committee to read through the samples and see what you want to customize for your group, besides just changing the name throughout the document. I warn you, this is a boring job. But it's important. There's a tendancy to start reading with good intentions but your eyes quickly glaze over and it's easy to think "sounds official, this is all fine". No - you need to make sure it works for you.

Come back and ask us questions. Many of us have been through it.

Hi All!
We are a new small charter school.
Did your board approve your bylaws?

We are wondering how to start this.
