What happens when the bylaws aren't adhered to?

Those that run the fundraiser, should not the one that selects the winners of any contests related to it. The information is handed over to a neutral party and names picked or papers reviewed to ensure that all is fair.

We had our walk a thon and each child that made a contribution was entered into a drawing for a chance at winning one of 3 prizes. One of the women that ran it and has had issues in the past put the names in the jar of those participating in the walk. Well to everyone's surprise, guess who's son won the IPOD!! Needless to say, she was not selected to chair an event this year and parents that worked the walk a thon stated that they always felt that they were being "left out" of something. So it was not comfortable for many reasons.

Making a positive difference one project at a time <img src=images/smilies/smile.gif>

that's terrible. Our board has actually " put back" raffle tickets that have been pulled with our names.. we have legitimately won things " fair and square" but we don't want that perception that our programs are " fixed" :)

the repurcussions are, if people dont like what they see, they wont vote those people in again or support them while they finish their term.

there is no where to go, if bylaws arent adhered to. the group just loses credibility.

reminds me of one school, the children of the board members were always the ones who seemed to 'win' everything, even the 'guess of the pennies in the jar', tothe EXACT number...............it looked really lame. (i was not on the board)

Well, the two parents who counted ended up winning the large prizes that were offered. We did just re-write our bylaws last year and try to adhere to them as strictly as possible. They're just very flip about the bylaws - and I think there should be some sort of repercussion for not following them.

Depends. I am assuming that by you saying " questions about the funds" you mean they were short in the count. By how much? Is this a trust issue , ie does the rest of the board not trust these 2 individuals together? Did a parent say they sent in money, and it's not accounted for? I would like read more specific details before I offer any concrete suggestions.. there are a lot of different ways of handling situations regarding money.

As far as by-laws are concerned, does your team always follow them? Are they outdated rules that were written 15 years ago, and no one really knows what's in them, or are they strictly adhered to- on all other issues?

What, exactly do you think needs to be done? and why?

In our recent large fundraiser, our treasurer counted all of the money alone or with the help of the fundraiser chair. Our bylaws state that at least one other board member must be present, which did not happen. There were some questions about the funds and now we find out this. What do we do next? Help!!
