Thank you for your feedback. The annual campaign/capital campaign is going to be used to fund a new building. The campaign was created by our head of school. Again, this is a private K-8 school, so we do not report back to the school district.

I would love to know more about the legal benefits that we can use since we do have our own 501c3.

Our bylaws are currently be re-written, since the prior bylaws were written prior to us getting our 501c3.

Does anyone have an example of what we need in our bylaws to reference the 501c3.

Thank you!

what a sticky situation, my first response is that you are a 501(c)3 which means you are seperate from your school. Yet you state that all of your funds generally go to the school in terms of tangible things, now they are asking for something that is basically non-tangible. I think you will have a problem with getting receipts after the fact, I find it hard to believe that your district is going to answer to you.
The problem is that you need the school to function so some sort of happy medium needs to be reached. I am sure there are posters out there like JHB who can tell you what the legal aspect of it is, I just see problems either way.
I am curious what the annual campaign committee is and who started?

I think that they learn it from our kids, to just ask for anything that they want, with no regard for how it's perceived. And yes, they can ask for you to write them one big check...but do you want to? It doesn't sound that way from the tone of your post.
I would start with going to your by-laws. If there are no stipulations there about how money is dispersed, I would add them by going through all the proper channels. I am sure others will be giving you great advise on how to handle. Good luck.

My advise to you would be to check your bylaws first. If your group does issue a check to the school, just make sure they provide you with all receipts as proof of how the money was spent.

What exactly is an annual campaign committee and why was it started? Are they part of your PTO or a separate entity? As for our PTO group, no money can be spent without a vote being taken. No one at our school is permitted to tell the PTO how to spend their money. Check your bylaws, talk to your board members and the school principal. Keep us posted on what happens.

I am the treasurer of our PTO and we have our own 501(c)3, and I am needing advice on fundraising dollars. As the PTO our primary responsibility is to raise funds for the school. If I manage the fund raisers, and provide assets, curriculum, books, etc. to the school, and now the school is requesting a "check" instead of us buying items for the school...can they do this? Also, an annual campaign committee has been started, and this group is requesting that all fund raising be donated to this annual campaign, and they want all the detailed information about the fundraising. HELP!!!
