Volunteering has actually opened the door alot for people in my area. I think when a principal sees a volunteer going above and beyond they feel the volunteer is valuable and can only add to their staff. History at my school shows this happen alot. To be honest a few years back I was asked of I wanted a job at school, I said no but that I would sub. Ending up subbing everyday and found that it was to much for me to handle. At times it got hard especially if the principal and I was having a "disagreement". However I have seen it work...so good luck!

I am a part time staff member and PTO President. I work as a monitor and a substitute parapro. I see no problems with doing this. I agree as long as your by-laws do not state anything against it then there is no conflict of interest.

I find it actually helps in the long run because I am there everyday and I do have the respect of all the staff members.

It was common at my last school. There was nothing in the bylaws to prevent it and nobody saw a confict of interest.

The principal must think very highly of you and your work through the PTO to bring you onto his staff! Way to go!!!

I don't see any problem with it, CapeDad. I think it's fairly common, for example, for PTO leaders (who become well known around the school) to morph intoclassroom aides or the like. It's a natural transition.

Go Cape Dad- we maynot always agree on advice given but I see no conflict of interest- you seem to have all you bylaws and stuff in place (from advice given on other posts) as long as there's no language forbidding it- so I see no reason why a school couldnt hire someone from outside but within its support structure (ie PTA/O, Booster club) - at the PTA/O's I've been involved in many parents that are aides, teachers, secretaries, etc have joined and or held board positions while working for the school. It nice to have a semi balance percentage of non employee to parents not employed by school system but you go with what works.

I'd do it.

From reading your posts, you would surely be a great asset to any school to have on staff.
Sounds like youre worried about conflict of interest, doesnt sound like your principal is worried about it one bit, so neither should you.
(But kudos to you for considering that point anyway!)
