To make reading more fun for students—and raise money, to boot—the Slippery Rock Area Elementary PTCC turned its readathon fundraiser into an adventure, Survivor-style. During a two-week period, 229 students in grades K-5 wore “tribe” colors, competed to build the highest tower of books, went on a schoolwide scavenger hunt, exchanged books with classmates, and (of course) racked up some solid reading time. Prizes included homework “immunity” passes, picnic lunches, and signed sports gear. In the end, they collectively read for almost 64,000 minutes, and the parent group raised more than $7,900.
