Mother-Son Hoedown
For more than 20 years, the McDowell Elementary PTO in Hudson, Ohio, has hosted a Mother-Son Hoedown for 3rd grade boys each fall. Boys and their moms—or other special ladies—gather for a fun night spent dancing and socializing. The evening begins with a traditional “cowboy” dinner of chicken and fixings, followed by simple games to keep the boys busy. For the last hour of the evening, a caller—the same since the event began—leads the pairs through traditional line and square dance routines. The boys come to the event decked out in festive clothing like cowboy boots and plaid shirts, while the moms wear overalls, denim skirts, and the like. The event cost of $20 per pair includes the dinner, dancing, and games, as well as a keepsake photograph and a bandana.
