For a great Halloween movie tie-in, make Menehune Sliders (recipe below), featuring the mythical character Menehune from The Legend of Hallowaiian movie. If you’re short on time (or volunteer sous-chefs), prep the ingredients ahead of time and then invite families to assemble their own monster sandwich creations before the movie starts!
4. Show the DVD movie trailer for The Legend of Hallowaiian.
Ahead of your scheduled movie, play the provided DVD movie trailer for The Legend of Hallowaiian, a family adventure set in Hawaii during a spooky Halloween evening (rated PG). The Legend of Hallowaiian is the movie of the month on DirecTV from Sept. 20 to Oct. 16 and will be shown in select theaters throughout the country. Families can watch the trailer to learn more about The Legend of Hallowaiian movie and their chance to win a family trip to Hawaii!
MENEHUNE SLIDERS (serves 200)
-
36 pounds roast beef or pulled pork
-
18 (15 oz.) bottles King’s Hawaiian Original Sweet Pineapple BBQ Sauce
-
18 12-packs King’s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sweet Dinner Rolls
-
100 slices Monterey jack cheese, cut into quarters
-
8 cups shredded carrots
-
8 cups julienned red bell peppers
-
400 blue cereal loops
-
400 toothpicks
-
108 medium black olives, quartered
-
200 sweet red baby peppers
-
Mix together roast beef or pulled pork and King’s Hawaiian Original Sweet Pineapple BBQ Sauce.
-
Slice King’s Hawaiian dinner rolls in half; separate top half from bottom half. Spoon portion of meat onto bottom half of each roll.
-
Use quarter slice of cheese to create teeth for each slider. Place teeth on top of meat.
-
Slice inch-long slit across top half of each roll to place “hair” into (see step #5 for making hair). Place on top of meat, creating slider.
-
For hair: Arrange shredded carrots and julienned bell pepper into prepared slit across top of roll.
-
For eyes: Use quarter slice of cheese to create two eye shapes for each slider. Use two toothpicks to attach cheese. Place blue cereal loop and olive quarter onto each toothpick.
-
For nose, eyebrows, and ears: Cut tip of baby pepper as nose. Divide remaining pepper in half. Cut one portion lengthwise to create ears and cut other portion into two rectangles for eyebrows. Gently place onto slider.
Short on time? Just add two “eyes” (pimiento olives on toothpicks) and “hair” (shredded carrots) to each sandwich!
