Community Welcome Night
South Polk Elementary PTO in Fort Polk, La., starts its school year with an Open House and Resource Night to provide families and community members a chance to get to know the town’s services while touring the school, visiting classrooms, and meeting educators. Agencies from Fort Polk such as Army Community Service, the local hospital, Child and Youth Services, Parent to Parent, Military Child Education Coalition, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Military Family Life Consultants provide information for parents about services available locally. The PTO also offers gently used uniform clothing items free of charge, and at last year’s event, they sought volunteers for a new program to improve reading fluency and comprehension. The event brought more than 375 people to the school.
