Brooklyn School P.S. 107, a Lowe’s Toolbox Grant Recipient, in National Spotlight
We first encountered this great group a few years back when they became one of our Parent Group of the Year winners for their inner-city garden, dubbed The Sunshine Garden. The group also was one of our Lowe’s Toolbox Grant recipients for this gardening project.
P.S. 107 shared some insights with us in our August 2011 article on how to start a school garden. Michele Israel, co-chair of the PTA’s garden committee, said a garden helps students learn about healthy eating as well as nature and their role in it. “It’s about real-world learning that is meaningful and practical,’’ Israel said. “It’s about being civic-minded,” Israel said.
And yesterday, a group of P.S. 107 students stood beaming alongside First Lady Michelle Obama on Good Morning America! They were on hand to show the simplicity of gardening by planting various vegetables in containers. They also showed the benefits of this work by displaying a beautiful salad and blueberry cake!
Way to go P.S. 107!
