You ask and I will reply, sorry it has taken me so long!! Probably the funniest skit is the following:
-You have five people standing around in different locations these people have the following names :1-someone else will do it 2:I don't have the time 3:No one ever asks 4:I don't know anyone 5: it's not for me.

I start in saying a little about our group and what we do, some events, things like that. As I do this I walk over to a person introduce myself and asks them to join me. Of course they tell me their "name" at that point the skit stops and I will take their name and point out like if you think someone else will do it so does the person next to you. No one ever asks: I have actually gotten on my knees and begged at this point, I don't know anyone: then i will asks my helpers how many of us knew each other before we got involved...the answer of course is none. I don't have the time: It can be five hours a year or hundred hours, talk about married parents, single parents, grandparents, people who work nights/days, etc. This works great if your helpers is a full time worker, stay at home, part time worker, night worker, etc.

So one by one you are inviting them to join you but you explain about their name. By the end of the skit they are all standing by me...

Another skit that we do which people love is that again with helpers they have articles on parent involvement, they read a fact about it. I hold a whole bunch of papers, magazines, etc.

Each person says their "fact" and then when they are done I move up in front of them look at the parents watching us and tell them that none of that matters...when I say that I throw up all of my papers except one packet. Of course the papers go all over the place again except this one packet. After they get done laughing I tell them that the only thing that matters is this packet...the packet is the list of all of the students at our school and their child is on that list!! Gets them thinking and you are sure to get their attention!

Have fun with it, you are more apt to have their attention with that than just talking about your group. We have a power point that is really to the point, it has alot of pictures of kids at events smiling and the song that plays with it is "did you ever know that youre my hero?" The last frame of it says "You too can be a hero...get involved?"

Another thing you can do is have a puzzle made out of poster board, we do a stick kid because that is our mascot. make about six pieces and each piece represents a part of the school like PTo, staff, administrators, school board, community, etc. the last piece of the puzzle is a heart that goes right in the center which represents their child. It works great when your puzzle is a child when all complete! But leave that heart for last!

What we talk about is volunteering in general, hey if they don't want to help the pto then maybe another part of the school. Bottom line is that they get involved. have fun! hope this helps!

Pals,

Do you have any skits you could post? I am the volunteer coordinator for the upcoming school year...my goal is to increase our volunteers. We have a Volunteer Breakfast at the beginning of the year and this would be an excellent idea.

Love your suggestions!!

Pals, Love your ideas. I am a new PTO President who is taking over a PTO that has been non functional for about 8 years. I have a great board who wants to break this cycle. They are so full of energy and it is great.

Would you please send me more details to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.? I have learned so much on these posts and have gotten even more excited if that is possible

We actually start at Kindergarten registration where we present each child with a welcome gift from the pto, this year they all received the book "The Kissing Hand". Inside the cover was a sticker that said "Welcome to the Lanigan Family, we will see you in September." The kids are so excited about getting a gift, then we have flyers and our scrapbooks out at registration and usually screening. Screening is great because while the kids are away the parents can look at the scrapbook.
The day of K-Orientation we host a coffee and donut cart and the parents love that, we do a skit about why get involved. Usually they are laughing by the time we get done, but they remember. We also have a family packet that our info goes home to every family as well as volunteering info. You can never do too much but have fun doing it...
