Here's my other issue with beer at this family event: what about drinking and driving? It's horrible to imagine that you have an event that puts parents behind the wheel, with children in the car, after the parent has had beer. I assume that the families have to drive home at some point when the event ends! Terrible decision making going on with this event. Please put safety first!

Our school district has a strict school policy that no one, absolutely no one, can bring alcoholic beverages or smoke on school property. Our PTA would NEVER, NEVER, consider alcoholic beverages at an event when children are present! What a horrible example to set. I would be absolutely furious if this happened at any school in our district!!

We wonder why our kids have a problem with alcohol these days? Their parents can't attend a school function without having alcohol there. Kids are getting the message that we can't have fun unless there is beer. I agree with some of the other people, I would not allow my child to attend an event where the parents brought alcohol. As a PTO president I wouldn't tolerate it on school grounds. I am curious what your school faculty thinks of this.

Our State PTA has 7 resolutions that address the issue of alcohol and drugs and related topics (drunk driving etc)
That being said, we do not provide alcohol at any PTA functions. We have allowed it to be available at events off school grounds, where children generally are not participating, but we do not provide it. (example-past conventions)
As a rule, PTAs need to lead by example and not provide alcohol at an event.

Our school districts have several programs relating to the use of alcohol and drugs. If a student brings alcohol on school grounds, they are required to attend classes that in addition, illustrate the health effects of alcohol usage.

Neither our PTA or school district insurance covers liability relating to alcohol at events.

Why would 90% of adults need alcohol at a child's event??? I can see the outrage.

There is NO WAY beer would be allowed at a school function, PTO sponsored, or not. We don't even allow smoking! I can't believe this is even an issue. What they do at home is their business, but this had reprocutions that far outway just their kids. I think the principal should get involved and insist that alcohol be banned from future events.

Wow!!! No way in the world would I let my child go to a function knowing that most of the parents have brought beer. I don't even go out with friends when I know their sole purpose is to go out and drink. Drinking and driving, hello, not even one beer. When I was a child I found out that my father (age16) was in an accident and was drunk. He crashed into a telephone pole and his best friend riding with him died. No kids should be around beer at any function. And people wonder why our children are growing up and going to drinking parties, drinking and driving. Not to mention the college drinking parties where they drink themselves to death. Our children look up to us. They are young and impressionable. Beer should be an adult event when the kids are all tucked away in bed. Now I know that you said that nothing bad ever happens at these event, but there is a first time for everything and thats why they are called "ACCIDENTS!"
