Thanks for the info. I'd like to compare companies to see which is most cost efficient.

We got our PTO insurance from AIM Insurance out of Texas. Easy to work with and I think it's almost exactly the same covergae we had when we were a PTA. I'll try and finda web-site or a phone number.

This is the main reason we are looking into getting insurance to get us covered. I just
spoke to the lady that their article was in the
PTO Today. Their www address is:
www.rvnuccio.com then go to school support.
I know that we will be purchasing some very soon.

There was an article a few issues back about insurance in PTO Today, and I think you can find it online. It includes the names of two firms that specialize in writing parent group policies. Either of them could provide you better information and advice than any of us could.

...but that's not going to stop me. The most important part of our policy is liability coverage in the event somebody is injured at a PTA event. Our school district will not allow us to hold events on school property or promote events unless we can provide them with a copy of our insurance certificate. There was a district wide meeting last fall where the groups at several schools were told they could not use the building until the certificate was filed -- reportedly, one of them had an event planned for just a few days later; luckily for them they had the insurance, just hadn't filed it with the district office.

We have a major fundraiser going on each year to send our 6th graders to an outdoor education center. That group is separate from the PTA, affiliated directly with the school. As such, they are not covered by the state law exempting them from collecting sales tax. Since they have to collect tax on anything they sell, that reduces the effectiveness of those events by about 7%. Why don't we do those as PTA fund raisers, exempt from tax, and then have PTA donate the money to their activity fund? (After all, it is the same parents!)

The reason why not is LIABILITY. Our insurance does not cover us for that event, so we are prohibited from being a primary sponsor of that trip. If a kid got hurt on the trip. If there was an accident involving the bus. Anything, we would have no coverage, so we need to have no liability.
