Balancing work and PTO

I agree I dont think anyone can judge or disqualify a person just because they have a full-time job- I think the ideal would be an at home person but a fulltime person can and has done it hundreds (thousands??) of times before and succeeded.

In todays society not enough parents MAKE volunteering at school, helping or juggling a PTA /PTO position.

It can and has worked- take all candidates seriously and choose the best one - it still IS a giant crap shoot finding volunteers to run an org (how many have actually been trained to do any PTA/PTO board positions??)

It is totally awesome that you can juggle all of those things. I don't think the last part is really fair, though.

Like Shawn said above -- life happens -- and no matter how much we want to do some things, we have to do others.

I know that the first lady (LOL) of Cape PTO works in a job where she could never handle a PTO officer's duties. Hours, travel, and plain old stress from work are too much, and then when she finally does get some personal time, she likes to actually do things with her kids.

Our current VP was the model volunteer -- she'd take vacation time from her job to make sure she could be at school. She has gotten to the point, though, where life is happening and she has had to scale back her involvement.

It is not easy to commit to doing what we do.

I'll see the candidate next week at our movie night, and I'll be sure to discuss this thread. :-)

If you don't expect too much from me, you might not be let down. <img src=images/smilies/smile.gif>

I'm a single mom with a full time job & serving as President of our group. It is difficult, but with good people around me things have been going great. I plan to do it again next year unless someone else wants to step up. I would NEVER do the co-president thing. The buck has to stop somewhere, and you might be butting heads on making simple decisions. And yes, I do feel that ALL parents should be giving some time for the kids. If this person thinks they can do this, let them try. Hopefully their employer is somewhat flexible because there are times you just have to be there. Best of luck to you!

I have been PTO President for 4 wonderful years, I go to school part time, am a Girl Scout Troop leader and a wife and mother of 1, and I wprk a full time, four day a week job. I have not neglected any of my responsibilities in any of my jobs. If anything, people can look at me and say there's no really no such excuse as "I'm too busy." You make the time to do the things that are important to you and your family. No one can judge your "working full time" candidate except herself.

Thanks for helping and being honest. That sort of thing is what she's afraid of, though I really do not think that would happen with us.

Its sad but what can happen- it is a volunteer position NOt a paid position- I think sometime we lose the sight of that when something goes wrong or we are let down- LIFE happens even to the greatest people with the best of intentions when it comes to volunteer positions.
