Classroom funds-lump sum or by student?

19 years 4 weeks ago #101778 by SHC
We give a certain amount to every teacher ($200). Every homeroom teacher, music teacher, religion teacher, PE teacher, etc. gets the same thing. It's too complicated to figure out how many students the PE teacher teaches, etc. so it's a flat amount.

C.Brooks,
Teachers not using all their funds was part of the reason we went through an overhaul of our program last year. We used to decide how much to allot per teacher and then write a check to the school and they would administer the funds. Any left over monies just sat there doing nothing. Some teachers saved their money up for big items they wanted and others just never used it.

This past year we pulled the program back under our control and the teachers requested their reimbursements from us. We told them to spend their money and put in reimbursement requests by March 1. After all the reimbursements were paid we looked at what was left and spent the money on items from a wish list created by the principal and staff that contained items everyone could use. This way the money didn't just sit around doing nothing. The teachers knew up front they had to use it or lose it.

My current "research" is based on discussions we've had on how to make the program more equitable and insure that every child is getting a fair share of the money.

Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.

We give a lump sum. I can't even remember how much it is. I am think $100.00 for teachers and $50.00 for aides. I am still inquiring about my next venture. I am told that many of the teachers did not even use their alloted money.

Hello our school has donated for years to the teachers and it works great. PTO gives each Teacher $125 and the school board gives each class money per child. Good luck

At our old school we did a per student allotment. The teachers had to submit their receipts though for reimbursements and it could not exceed their total amount. We gave a lump sum to classes that "shared" students- like special ed, reading resource, (students had a regular class but went to these other classes say like one day a week) The per student was $10 and the flat was $50. It worked very well.

Our PTO gives both a flat amount to each class and a dollar amount per student in that class. It seems to work pretty well for us. I intend to ask the teachers for feedback on the amount . . . I'm not sure if it's sufficient to keep up with rising costs. I think the amount needed varies each year as parental donations to each class for parties vary. I've seen years when the kids can't possibly eat all the snacks sent in for a party and years when the same two or three of us supply everything.
