Our Youth Cheer Organization uses plumbing pipe for the spirit stick. My husband gets it for me. Comes in 10' lengths - he cuts for me in 1' pieces. It's a little bigger than an 1" in diameter, I think, might be just 1". The girls decorate it and bring back for a contest the last day of camp. If you want it to make noice can put whatever inside, someone suggested rice - I've seen marbles, beans, and small pasta. You can by the plumbing pipe caps and glue on with the glue for that kind of pipe to secure the caps. But most don't put something for noice and caps...and decorate it. They look super!

Mommae1083,
Thanks for the update. I think it's a lot of fun when a poster writes in with updates since the original question. Sound like you really did a great job and it's working out well. It's nice of you to take time to share this part with us, too.

Well our Spirit Sticks have been a BIG hit. I am not sure who is more into winning the teachers or the students. The way we decie who gets to win the stick for the week is the class with the most students wearing their school spirit tee-shirt on Fridays(we wear uniforms). We have one 5th grade class that has won it it now every week since we started, they have also won the "Golden Skate Award" two tines(for having the most students attend our monthly skate night). At the end of the year the class with most spirit will win a party from the PTA. Every Friday as soon as the students see me walking the halls they want to know who won the Spirit Stick but I don't tell them until Monday when our morning announcements are done. I am very pleased with the way things have turned out.

"It's Elementary" has mascot spirit sticks www.itselementary.com. I don't think they have them on their site but they are in their new catalog.

What a great idea to have spirit Friday!! Our school has spirit shirts that we wear on Friday's, what other things could you incorporate into winning the Spirit Stick? Do you have cheers or good behavior, or what? Thanks to everybody with all of your great ideas. This is a great place to help make our schools better! P.S. I posted a blurb about Fundraising after American tragedy. I could use some help about live and silent auction ideas. Thanks, Pennye

That sounds so cool!! I would like to present this at our next meeting. What would be some ways that each class room could win the stick?
