Carnival: redemption booth VS individual prizes

20 years 1 month ago #87638 by winnie77
We did our carnival on 5/21/2004 and we did a redemption booth. The whole day was a huge hit. We rented 20 games from a company in Scranton, Pa. The kids played the games 3 times for tickets and then after that they could play the game more times but it was just for fun. We kept track by the pouches that the kids wore around their neck. It was just a ziploc bag with a paper taped to it with the numbers 1-20 on it with 3 lines after it. once the kids played the game, the parent checked off that they played. The kids walked away with no more then 3 tickets each time they played each game. but for example if the kids threw the foot ball and it didn't make it through the hole on one of the 3 tries we gave the kids 1 ticket for trying the games. We also had 2 moon bounces, sand art, face painting, hair beading, nail painting, and tempory tattoos. Once all the games were rented and all the stuff was paid for, we figured out how much we had left in our budget took that number and divided by the number of kids in the school and that is how much we could spend on each kid in prizes. For us it worked out to be 5.50 a kids. So we bought a 4 dollar "grand prize" then a 50 cent prize and a 1 dollar prize. We never counted the tickets. We just made sure each kid walked away with one grand prize, one dollar prize and one 50 cent prize. We did take the tickets and pretend to count them but we never really counted. almost 5 days later and the kids are still talking about carnival. If you have any questions email me. Ok I'ma go over all of them even the obvious ones just so I don't get myself confused lol

Duck Pond- Fill up a pool with water and have those floaty ducks. If the kid picks up a duck with the bottom not marked then they get to pick a prize from the #1 area......if they pick one that is marked they get a prize from #2

Lolipop tree told you about earlier

Poster Toss: you can buy cheepy posters and lay them on the floor (1 of each kind) kids stand behind a line and throw rings at the posters. The entire ring has to land on the poster and then they can pick a poster any kind they want...if not they get 1 token for playing

Ping Pong Toss- we take glass fishbowls and put them side by side in a square pattern. Kids stand behind a line and throw it (just like at state fairs) they get 3 pingpongs and if none get in they get 1 token. If they get any in they get another token.

Par 3 golf-- We lay a long green thing of felt on the floor. At the end of the felt we tape a circle of construction paper. They have 3 tries to get the ball on the circle (touching the outside counts for us too) they get 2 tokens.....if not they get 1 token

Tic/tac/toe: We had someone make a box out of wood with a blank bottom (with dividers) of the tic tac toe pattern. Kids take, now I can't remember what the ball is called but you can get them at toy stores--they are balls with hollowed out centers and like slits cut in the balls and they bounce--the kids have 5 tries to throw the balls from behind a line and land them in a tic tac toe pattern...if they get it they get 2 tokens if not 1 token

Hoopla- we borrow someones kiddie basketball hoop and kids stand behind a line. If they get 0 baskets in they get 1 token...if they get any in they get 2 tokens, we make different starting lines depending on grade/age

Milk can toss--just like the fair we have wooden milk cans in a pyramid and kids have to knock them down.....they do it 2 tokens they don't 1 token

Tip the Cat- we took half gallon empty milk jugs and decorated them like a cat. They stand in a row on a table and kids throw bean bags at them trying to knock them off the table...they do it 2 tokens they don't 1 token

Bozo the clown- we take 5 plastic plant planters and put them in a vertical row numbered 1-5. Kids stand behind a line and throw ping pong balls in order starting with 1 then 2....
we consider this one a baby game so if they get 0 in they get a prize from #1, if they get 1-3 buckets they get from prize #2 and 4-5 they get from prize #3

Senor Frog. We build a wooden like sledge thing at the fair but a smaller scale. The kids hit the sledge hammer on one end and there is a bean bag frog on the other....they have to get the frog in a bucket. They don't get it 1 token, they do 2 tokens.

Another thing...If you have an 'Old Spaghetti Factory' there they have a new program here that you might want to check into. They will come to the school the day of the carnival and walk around handing out balloons to all the kids for free as long as they can hand out advertisement also.

I'm going on vacation tonight for a week so won't be here for a bit...hope I helped you out (lol can you tell I love talking carnival info)

My first thought when you said poker tokens was "Who brings their own from home?" I like your way aroung that.
I'm always interested in more games. Please share. And thank you so much for the good info.

each game is different but we always give them a token for playing win or loose beings its a carnival. For the ring toss you could do it hard where you need all three rings to win a token or you could break that down to something like 1 ring 1 token, 2-3 rings 2 tokens. Certain games like speed pitch and football toss type games you wouldn't give a token at all. Lolipop tree they get 1 automatic token and then we go to prizes if the lolipop stick is marked you get a prize instead of a token. All baby games we set up like that also because honestly babies could care less about tokens and like pretty much everything they get, its more the getting something then what it is. As for tokens we just buy cheap generic poker chips. We put a sticker in the centers of each token and plan to change the sticker every year. We found out last year middle school kids were bringing in poker chips of their own and using them in the redemption center. I can give you some really good game ideas too if you'd like

I like the token idea. That is just smart.
Do you get special tokens and where do you get them?

Also, how are tokens awarded per game? For example, on a ring toss, if you get three tries, how many times do you have to succeed to get a token?

we don't use tickets in the redemption center......we sell tickets for 25cents each and they use them to play the games. Most games are 2 tickets, baby games are 1 ticket and harder games like a football toss or something that is older kid game is 3 tickets. Kids get tokens (poker chips) at the games and collect those to turn into the redemption center, poker chips are a thousand time easier to count when you've been doing it all day then tickets (your eyes start to cross on tickets) As far as workers...yes they go back and forth basically to whoever needs assistant so they more stay with a kid while they do their shopping instead of having a person at each station. We start at 1 token and go all the way up to 30 tokens (big prizes like lil radios and such) we don't do every number up to 30 its like 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 12, 16, 24, 30 tokens depending upon the cost of the prizes
