Auction info needed

We did a combination live and silent auction. We had a BBQ dinner during the preview...just tried to break even on that. We netted over $11,000. It was student artwork and other stuff collected from the community. The big item was Disney World tickets. We wrote them and told them we would put cash with the tickets to pay for hotel/transportation and they came through. It was great!

Auctions are a great idea. I was able to move from a little silent auction generating between $3K and $4K to a dinner/auction which averaged $35K in the last two years. (Our school's enrollment is only 150.) We now have a sit down catered dinner for almost 300 with 250 auction items. The best selling items are those that the kids have done as a class, such as painted furniture. My advice: start early, keep it simple, gets LOTS of volunteers and organize your committees (acquisitions, decorating, food, class projects) early. Make yourself a time line and follow it. Keep good records and invite people outside of your school community to come. I would be happy to answer your email if you wish. Denise

Here's an (relatively older) auction article:

Hope it helps.
