Actually, I think the technical definition of "too much" involves both $$ and efforts.

Basically, if lobbying is a real significnt part of your efforts, you should have one of the other legal designations.

But supporting town referendumas and the like typically don't reach that threshold for the average PTO.

Patti - you mention that your local PTO is organized under a school district PTO umbrella. There may not be any legal limitations on your PTO's supporting the referendum,but you might want to take a look at your PTO's bylaws, and those of the distict PTO, if they are different. There might be some stated limitations in your bylaws that would govern your PTO.

Hi Shawn -

This is not exactly true. As a 501c3, you can lobby a modest amount (I forget the legalese), but it shouldn't represent a particularly significant amount of your efforts.

There are other designations from the IRS for groups that want to lobby more.

That said, typically a parent group lobbying for against a school levy or the like is just fine.
