This teacher is also loving and nurturing...just goes overboard on those conduct slips, I think. The kids, for the most part, seem to like her, although my now-4th grader described her as "tough". I have decided I'm not going to overreact if we ever get another conduct slip (we've had one)..I'm just "considering the source".

We have the opposite problem at our school. In our town we have the most loving & nurturing teachers of all the schools. This is a blessing for the most part. But there are kids that need more discipline.

Out of my 3 kids, the first did great in our school. My middle is as lazy as they come but gets away with it by just smiling & flashing her big baby blue eyes. All of her teachers loved her!
My youngest is tough, why not she has 2 older sisters. I've asked for the strict teachers for my younger two and always get them except once.

My middle daughter had a teacher who wanted to be her friend, I'm not paying my tax dollars for this teacher to be a friend, my daughter has enough friends, I wanted a teacher! I was told six weeks before school got out that she hadn't been completing her homework ALL YEAR long! I'm in the school daily and this teacher never said a word to me before this. She told me she didn't want my daughter to get in trouble, what a wasted year for my daughter.

After this I only want tough teachers who will insert their foot up my daughters a** the first day of school and not remove it until the last day!

There has to be a healthy balance of loving, nurturing/strict & tough. Hopefully the other teachers in your school have that balance.

Maybe if the parent goes in to talk to the teacher she will lighten up a bit. If not, it will be a long hard year for that child!

Last year my son had a very strict teacher. If he forgot his snack in his backpack he was not allowed to get it. She was a great teacher though, he learned alot and he loved her so much. I wished more teachers were more strict, like when I was a kid, but I understand there is an over the top point. My neice had the same teacher and she hated her, but now that she is in high school she appreciates her strictness.

Our schools are going to be using a program called CHAMPS. I wished I could elaborate on that all I know is they are going to try to get on the same page about discipline.

You know, I ASKED for this teacher and we've had her before so I knew what I was in for. I just feel sorry for those folks whose almost perfect (really) first child is in this class and she got TWO conduct slips two days in a row for something odd like not looking at the teacher when she was supposed to...I think giving them only TWO reprimands before a conduct slip is a bit strict (you get a conduct slip on the second reprimand) but I think these parents are figuring this teacher out..I'm just a bit bummed because our school has had this reputation for 15 or 20 years (that we're rigid) and this kind of teacher just keeps that reputation alive.

I also have a first grader. I asked to have the toughest teacher because my little darling is pure trouble!

We have the three card system. Most cards stay green, some get turned to yellow but when it gets flipped to red you have to go see the principal. Just sitting out in front of his office in the "bad girl/boy" chair is a scary thing for young kids. Then the principal(who makes the kids sit there for a few minutes) gives the kid a lecture and hopes for the best.

I've been very lucky my daughters card has stayed green so far! She doesn't want to be the first to have a red card.

I've seen different types of teachers on all different levels.
All of the schools use basically the same methods, turning the cards over or a stoplight but the steps taken are generally the same. however, this year in 3rd grade, my son's teacher is stricter than he has experienced before. I even had a conversation with his principal today about it (my son got a citation for talking last week) and he said she turns in more citations than most of the teachers- he doesn't even look at them all of the time because she fills in so many. Just remind them that's it's only one year and like the real world, there are all different types.
