The PTO officers did not run for office based on a particular political platform. They didnt' get elected because of where they stand on certain political issues or because of their party affiliation. So how could a PTO Board presume to speak on behalf of its "constituants"? That's not not it works. Even the most noble sounding referendum or bond issue doesn't have 100% of the community. Granted, local, state, or national elected government officials can never speak for 100% of their constituants, but they were elected fair and square based on their political leanings in demoncratically managed elections. PTOs should encourage parents to get informed, and get out to vote, but not to advance a particular political agenda using the PTO's name.
I have a real problem when my PTO spends *any* money on *anything* other than direct support of the students.
Don't be asking me to raise money so you can spend it on mailers, flyers or signs or anything else that involves a political issue. Not even if it is just to say "get out and vote".
Organized calling, standing outside school in the morning and afternoon, visiting bus stops - great - just don't be spending money raised for the kids for campaigning.
Some of us do actually support our schools without supporting and saying yes to every single dime the school board asks for. It can be done.
It looks as if majority feels the same as my instincts were telling me. I did help pass out flyers that is just a reminder to parents/people to register to vote. It was a nonbias piece of information. After writing my first reply, I had looked in our bylaws hoping to find guidance on this issue. And yes, it is clearly stated that PTO will not be involved with political issues. So there is my final answer to the school board and referenum committee. Thank you all for your input!
Our bylaws also have a stance against the pto involved in politics. We have addressed the school board, but only as a request for the board to reverse one of its previous decisions.
We do get involved as our mission statement says we are here to support the school and community! We as a central PTO (all district PTO belong to this) vote to support a budget or referendum then we get out there with mailers and volunteers making calls to get the voters out! We think school support must take many levels!
Political issues have no business at the PTO level.
However, during a "good of the order" or (off the record) general announcement could be made AFTER business is conducted and would not be reported in the minutes.
Say, "the school board is starting up a task committee for the upcoming referendum. If you are interested in helping, contact so and so." and that's all - just a general announcement.
