Indoor Recess

Our lunches are staggered as well, and take place in the gym. For indoor recess our kids play games/read/draw in their classrooms. Which is tough on the teachers, because that takes away from their lunch time. The recess monitors help.

..youre probably right about that contract thing....

our teachers too are all at lunch during lunch, and recess is run by aides.

but aides dont have it in their contract to run indoor activties during recess/rain either. probably its up to the principal to decide how best to occupy kids on rainy days....and if parents arent happy with videos for recess, they should ask the principal what THEY can do, if anything. after all, its up to the principal to decide if pto can help at shcool during the shcool day, and recess is no differnt

ilove the new anti obesity ads.....a mom holding a happy meal passing it to a toddler and the script says...ITS IN YOUR HANDS

No, our teachers do not do recess. They are on lunch break at that time. We have lunch aides whom also serve as recess aides. That is why on bad wheather days the kids are in the classrooms with an aide playing.

As for your question on when did it change...We always had aides here even when I was a child. Our teachers never watched us at lunch or recess. But in cases where it has changed I would be willing to bet it changed at a point when the teachers union was renegotiating their contracts.

Here is a question for you all...do the teachers not do recess duty in your schools either? When I was in school..in the same county that my kids now attend school in...the teachers were in charge of recess duty and most especially when it was indoor recess. We all went back to our rooms for board games or reading etc. and the teacher monitored his/her room. When did that change?!

Here in CA (at least with the schools I've been involved with) the teachers are usually at lunch during the students lunchtime

The PTO purchased games, hula hoops, toss across, etc. for a portion of the kids to play. Sometimes they have lunchroom Idol where they get up and tell jokes or sing.

Making a positive difference one project at a time <img src=images/smilies/smile.gif>
