Nominating Committee

We have a nomination committee, and are in at the moment replacing 6 positions on the board. The committee is made of of 2 board members 2 teachers and 2 parents that are PTO members, I started looking for canidates in September with a listing opening for the school year 2005-2006, it was helpful to new parents and some old ones who were not sure what each positions responsibility was and how much of there time it would take. Just communicate you head off and people start to understand!

Our By-Laws state that the nominating committee be composed of no less than 3 and an uneven number of members who are elected at a regular meeting. The vice-president is the chair of the committee. Only current members can be elected. We publicized the elections in our parent bulletin in March. Like I've read here before, we don't usually get anyone who wants to run for an officers position but we do get some members who want to chair some of our committees. As far as officers, the members of our nominating committee work at person to person contact to get those positions filled. You always hear alot of comments about boards being a clique but this is my sixth year as a member and I feel that the leaders get to know which parents are reliable. So it may seem that it's a clique when in fact it's the hard-working, reliable members of the group. You can't just put anyone in the treasurer's position. We haven't ever had more than one person run for an office but if we did we would have a vote to determine who gets elected.

Thanks, bruj814, for that explanation. You're right, I guess the groups I spoke of are election committees as opposed to what nomination committees are supposed to be.

Sounds like some of the examples are "Election Comittes" who seek out candidates, not "Nominating Comittes", who's job is to present a slate

The purpose of the nominating comite is to choose a slate..that means 1 person for each position. That doesn't mean they pick the board though. Floor nominations are normally made after the slate is presented. If someone else throws there hat in and you find yourself to have 2 or more run for a postition, that's where a vote would come into play.
Normally the president can not be on the nominating comittee, but does appoint the chairperson

Hey C. Brooks, I'm with you. My understanding is that a nominating committee should find eligible and willing candidates for the positions, not just the ones "they" want. Your bylaws, though, do make it sound like they will choose only one person per position. In another club I belonged to, the nominating committee was specifically told it was not their job to discourage anyone from running, nor specifically steer them to a particular job (or away from one!) ;)
