Just an FYI-we just completed the ss-4 form online at the IRS website and had our EIN number within seconds! Couldn't have been faster or simpler.

Just wanted to thank everyone for there help. I did call today to check on the status of my form. They couldn't find it so she did go ahead and give me one right over the phone. She did ask if I wanted to put my social # but I just said no and she said fine and I should get it by mail soon. Thanks again for all the help, I should have posted sooner! It would have saved me some worry.

No, you don't contact them and update it when you are no longer affiliated with an organization. I don't know that the IRS really pays much attention to whose number is on there as a principal officer, unless they see that there are large numbers of EINs being opened by the same person over a period of time. I suspect they track that sort of thing for fraud/abuse purposes more than anything else. I can't even recall ever having any correspondence from the IRS addressed specifically to me (as opposed to just the organization name) related to any of these groups.

mum24kids, just wondering what happens with your ssn number if you are no longer involved with the organization? do you contact them and update it? we never had to give a social security number to receive the number, I guess they are cracking down in the last two years. I do know we were not able to open an bank account without this number. at the time we were totally starting from scratch.

RJK...I haven't applied for one by fax in years, but since you did already I wouldn't recommend that you now try to do it by phone to get one right away, because you could inadvertantly end up with two of them. I would call the IRS at 800-829-4933 and check on the status instead. My understanding is that the turnaround time is a max of 4 days, and I believe that when I did one that way a few years ago, I got it back the next day.

Everyone else who may be interested... You can now also apply online and get a number right away. However, they will make you give a social security number of a principal officer (lines 7 and 7a) if you apply online, as well as if you apply via phone, even though the instructions tell you that you don't need to IF you are starting a new business. As a treasurer for various companies/organizations, I've probably put my number on something like 10-15 of these over the years, and I've never had a problem.

I just did one for my daughter's soccer team, which isn't incorporated, two days ago, and they definitely required the name/SSN for that.

I have to agree with critter, i know there was NO way i would put my name and social security number to the school's pto. Looking at a copy of our application right now I see that part was left blank. Now I also see that I need to update that we are now incorporated and a 501(c)3....
